Summary/Abstract: In this paper an attempt is made of a new interpretation of domestic sources (mainly), revealing Bulgarian ethnic consciousness in IX —XIV c. The author has made an analysis of the problem in the context of historical and ethnic development of Bulgarians and has drawn following conclusions: In IX—X c. is created a consciousness of Bulgarian cultural community, based on the common Slavic language. The distinction from the Slavs outside Bulgarian state is achieved through the polytonim "Bulgarians". In the end of the X c. the consciousness of cultural identity is already available, but the consciousness of common origin is still lacking. In X — XI c. the ethnic consciousness is based mainly on the idea of territorial community, and from XIII c. the leading component of ethnic consciousness is the notion of common origin. In the same period among the basic components of ethnic consciousness appears the confessional one and in the next centuries of Ottoman rule it plays an important role for the preservation of Bulgarian nation (narodnost).
