Apostol Nikolaev-Stoumsky (1886 – 1971): Biographical Data and Musical Heritage

Summary/Abstract: The paper is a first attempt for a complex study of the main events in the dynamic creative life of Apostol Nikolaev-Stoumsky. The biographical data about his life are differentiated in five periods. In each of them his most significant compositions are chronologically included, as well as pictures and scores. An outstanding figure in Bulgarian musical culture of the 20th century, Apostol Nikolaev-Stoumsky has a lasting creative presence in Bulgarian church music. His compositions are an important part of church musical life in Bulgaria and they harmonize with the spirit and the ideas of creating a national church singing tradition in the first half of the 20th century.
