Summary/Abstract: This text is designed to introduce the reader to the historical and contemporary contexts of the debate which leads to academic degrees and titles. After a short introduction, which shows the process of the creation of titles over the centuries, I present the Polish scholars' promotion system. I present two main ideological positions resulting from the problem of sharing the scholars’ environment between liberal and conservative camps, which I find interesting. I supplement the theme with the Bologna Declaration, whose aim was to reform higher education in Europe, including the governance of the academics. Based on articles on the Internet, I also bring the reasonongs of both sides which were clarifi ed in the course of observation and participation in the problem under consideration. I then briefly present my position, which doesen’t take an arbitrary valuation but is just one of the voices in the discussion. The purpose of this article is to encourage people to think about their future in the world of science.
