Summary/Abstract: In analyzing selected texts of Polish and foreign children’s literature from the period of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it is worth paying att ention to their oppressiveness in sender- receiver perspective. The category of oppression can be observed depending on the childhood’s conception of the author and also the fact which participant of the literary communication is aff ected by the symbolic violence (it may be the child as well as an adult reading intermediary). Readers exploring the world have the right to know the authentic stories (about everything that is interesting for the child, including diffi cult subjects), but too intrusive educational function of text can be a kind of “ reading oppression “ – so not only authors should be aware of that, but also all those who bring a child into the world of reading.
