Changes in Norms for Literary Translation in Lithuania since 1990

Summary/Abstract: After the re-establishment of independence in 1990, major economic and cultural changes took place that strongly affected the process of literary translation in Lithuania. Commercial publishers and a free-market system have replaced the centralized Soviet literary system so that individual translators have more freedom to choose their strategies. Furthermore, reader demand means that far more literary translations are being produced, often by young translators influenced by Western practice. An analysis of recent literary translations shows a weakening in two norms that were very significant in the Soviet period. The first concerns the grammatical and phonological adaptation of proper names; now some place names and historical names are left in their original form. There is also a growing tendency to stop using footnotes, which were traditionally used to explain cultural references and, especially, foreignisms. Many translators now leave foreignisms unexplained, while others use intra-textual translation to avoid footnotes.
