Summary/Abstract: When I undertook the work of doing dramaturgy for the Andrić's novel "The Damned Yard" i.e. to adapt it for a stage, I was mainly concerned with what I did not want to get as a final result. A thought that was always on my mind at that time was that voiced by Etiene Surious thought: "No matter how interesting the theatre world we are offered, there is no play if no action between characters commences." Hence, it is nesessary to set the main characters first, the ones that will "spice" the action and ''bring" the whole construction to a close". The issue of main characters (Dzem, Ćamil, Karađoz) is an issue of drama/ dramaturgy itself. lt determines a technology ofestablishing the literary form ruled by entirely different laws from the ones understated in Andrić's magic formula: "to let one talk openly". The answer to this question reveals where is the emotional focus of Andrić's inspiration as well as his historically philosophical and poetic metaphor. Everything else, like reducing the number of characters to only five -one of which is female; abridging materials and putting this work of fiction into dialogues, belongs to the domain of formal dramaturgy.
