Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the Christian meaning of martyrdom. A martyr (Gr. martys) is a confessor of the Gospel through his sufferings and self-sacrifi ce following the example of Christ. During the bloody persecutions in the fi rst centuries, the Church continued to exist, became stronger and de-veloped due to the martyrdom of these people. A literature on martyrdom emerged, including the offi cial reports of the interrogatories and the statements of the eye witnesses. In preaching the Gos-pel, the Church always fi nds reluctance, suffering and prosecution, as passing the teaching of the Gospel on is a confrontation that can end in either receiving or rejecting it. The Church as a whole has the proof of martyrdom in both its Biblical meanings: as a confession and as a sacrifi ce. The Church lives and spreads knowledge via its members who undertake the risks of fi ghting the unfair-ness of the world on a daily basis.
