Summary/Abstract: The involvement of the Transylvanian Orthodox clergy in the political struggles between the two World Wars is an inciting and controversial topic that I have tried to present in this study. The theme concerns the attitude of a number of Orthodox priests who, as a consequence of the humili-ating life conditions they or their family members had to bear, enrolled in political parties. Their action did not go unnoticed and triggered attacks and bitter insults from political adversaries. The Orthodox offi cials themselves and reputed personalities of the era such as Nicolae Iorga con-demned clergy meddling in the bitter political disputes. Iorga vehemently pointed the fi nger at the Orthodox hierarchs to have earned their positions based on political criteria and even accused the Orthodox Church of having embraced clericalism. The Holy Synod, the highest authority of the Romanian Orthodoxy, tried to take legal and canoni-cal measures against the priests and hierarchs who managed banks or companies or against those engrossed in the political disputes, which turned out to be harmful for the Romanian Orthodoxy.
