Summary/Abstract: This study aims at describing the different type of renewable energy sources and at revealing the importance given by each country regarding the investments and technologies in the field. Particular attention is given to the potential of renewables and their role in reducing the dependence on energy imports, global warming and environmental pollution. The article considers four different axes of the national renewable energy policy in the countries analysed. Each axe is described in detail and reveals the support mechanism for promoting renewables. Based on the the most recent data regarding the production of renewables and their share in total energy consumption the study highlights the role played by renewables in each country invetigated. The most relevant conclusion of the paper is that the share of renewable energy sources in the energy supply will significantly increase in the future.
