Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the problems related to the adaptation of the Bulgarian households to the new socioeconomic conditions in the country after the global changes in 1989. The changes in the style and way of life of the Bulgarian households necessitated the development of new life and economic strategies. As the social aim of most political parties in Bulgaria, which is made known to the public, is the stability and prosperity of society through economic and political liberalism, the problem of the formation of the Bulgarian household as a new „socioeconomic field” is of essential importance. It involves the development of common economic strategy and the functioning of the members of the household as an economic community. On the basis of empirical data from a survey which has been conducted the author analyses both the subjective attitudes and the objective opportunities for the development of different types of strategies of economic activity. Three types of strategies have been described: for survival, stability and for extending the existing economic status. Most of the studied Bulgarian households (64,1%) develop strategies for „survival”, about one third (33,3%) for stability while only 2,5% for extending existing economic status. The analysis of the attitudes of the Bulgarian households shows that the Bulgarian does not tend to take an economic risk but even in the small settlements the households are trying to mobilize all their members in search of additional income resources. The results obtained from the survey enable the researcher to draw the conclusion that discrepancy still exists between the prevailing subjective paternalistic attitudes and the objective realities which require Bulgarian households' initiative and activity for their survival.
