Democracy and Post-Totalitarian Nationalism

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the real and potential pretentions of nationalists in Balkan countries after a brief review of the so called „modern nationalism”. Arguments are given in proof of the thesis that posttotalitarian nationalism in modern Bulgaria contrasts and combines two forms of nationalism — the regenerated bourgeois nationalism and recurrences of totalitarian nationalism. The article emphasizes the fact that posttotalitarian nationalism in the country is objectified mainly by three ethno-centrist „waves”: a) with notoriously manifested anti-Bulgarian purpose; b) with proclaimed non-Bulgarian, but not anti-Bulgarian orientation; c) with pro-Bulgarian ethno-centrist dominant. Contradictions („the double standard”) of Bulgarian nationalists are subject of a special analysis. Nationalistic mercantilism — political and commercial — is criticised. The main conclusion of the article is that it is imperative for the democratic forces in Bulgaria and in all other Balcan countries to unite against the rebelling rightwing forces of reaction. If they fail to do this, the Balcans may be convulsed again by bloody ethnic, religious or interstate conflicts.
