Summary/Abstract: This paper wanted to draw the attention to the fact that the attribute of “sacred” within sacral Islamic architecture is vulnerable during the process of restoration and conservation of painted decoration and ornaments. Restoration theory and practice are based on current international documents, primarily the well-known Venice Charter as one of the leading documents on protection of cultural heritage. Still, numerous problems appear in preserving and presenting painted decorations as remnants of material culture in the prayer area of mosques as sacred spaces.
