Summary/Abstract: The paper presents chosen results of qualitative research in the area of entrepreneurial opportunity identification. Opportunity recognition represents one of the most important aspects of entrepreneurship. Qualitative studies allow better understanding of the investigated processes. The analysis of qualitative data offers support for suggestion that pattern recognition is a key component of opportunity identification. Data presented in the paper also indicate that the ability to identify new opportunities is a function of the four discovery behaviours (observing, questioning, experimenting, idea networking) and a cognitive process which is the associated thinking. The process of opportunity recognition is a special case of the creative process.
