Summary/Abstract: The monograph is devoted to the urgent and debatable problem of formation of Old-Russian towns. It reviews the rise and fall of the Eastern Slavic towns, their evolution from tribal centres to centres of the territorial communes. The author studies the role which the latter played during the formation and destruction of the Southern Russian state organisms of the 11th-beginning of the 13th centuries, such as Kiev, Chernigov and Pereyaslavl lands. The study is based on the comprehensive analysis of a wide range of sources.
