Summary/Abstract: During the last decades of the 19th century, Serbian bourgeois started to develop living pattems and standards of the western European bourgeois. One of the important characteristics of this period is emergence of free time being a par exellance phenomenon of modern times. It was only as late as in the industrial age that this sort of the unknown time could have emerged, in which a person could be free from all duties. This had lead to changes in organization of social life by creating new rales and relations. One of the most important characteristics of this new phenomenon was "a trip out of town", the idea that the free time should serve as total break from usual everyday rhythm. Modest trips to the countryside, later holidays, became necessity rather then health need, thus being a sign of social class. Thus the trips started to bear a sign of social dividing line. Since it was the time of rising social consciousness, these new customs got their role also in creating of national identity.
