Summary/Abstract: The strong interest in politics that Belarusian artists have shown for several years has many causes. The first of these is the current political system and the decline in support for it among the majority of Belarusians; the second was the necessity to reassess the nature of power in general. Art is the only form of resistance that does not lead to rebellion in the literal sense, creating instead a subject who is independent of authoritarian discourse and official ideology. A similar phenomenon can be observed in Western art, which in the last few years of the economic crisis has included attempts to legitimize the current rule of capital. Are trends in Belarusian contemporary art (Marina Naprushkina, Sergey Shabochin, Elena Davidovich, Igor Savchenko, Andrey Lenkevich) moving in parallel with currents in Western art? Can we say that the problem of modern society – the loss of support for our governments – is helping artists to become a part of the global art world, or is it just a trend?
