Summary/Abstract: The late 19th and early 20th centuries mark a period of an especially intensive artistic transit: the modern capitalist society was growing exceptionally open and dynamic; artistic ideas were spreading, artists, exhibitions and artworks were travelling. This essay is devoted to the discussion of the close paths, though noncrossing, of two artists connected with Lithuania. Like within each historical period, the art transit of the early 20th century had its own characteristic features – geographical locations, which attracted artists from various regions. For the East and Central European artists of the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century, such a locality was Munich. It was here that the transit figure par excellence, a German expressionist artist of Russian descent Mariana Veriovkina (1860–1938) who regularly visited Lithuania, created; it was here as well that a well-known Lithuanian artist Petras Kalpokas (1880–1945) studied. The two did not know each other. They were connected with different artistic circles and their creative work represented different artistic trends. Veriovkina came to Munich from the Russian artistic environment, but she integrated herself into the German medium enriching it with the modern artistic experiments of French art and contributing to the development of a new German artistic trend, expressionism.
