Summary/Abstract: HD resolution is about 5 times more than SD and the contrast range is extended to 7.5 stops. As a consequence, we will have to light a lot more precisely in the future; to take full advantage of HD we have to be exact within a 1/4 of a T-stop. In multi-camera productions much more attention has to be paid to an absolutely even illumination of the object for all possible camera angles. The background needs to be separated clearly from the object by means of the lighting design. HD also offers new possibilities to make the best use of all the transitory areas created by a light source between diffuse light and shadow.
