Summary/Abstract: Over the last two decades, the idea of nation has been down-graded to a mere cultural artefact — “a product of invention and social engineering” to quote a referential book on the matter. (Confino 1997: 186) The so-called cultural turn in the study of nationalism essentially comes down to two things: a strong emphasis on the nation seen as an imaginary community, as a product of collective memory, and a special attention to the narrative devices involved in the projection of national spaces.
