Summary/Abstract: Over the last three decades Jaan Kross (b. 1920) has not only built up his renown as the most outstanding (and also, internationally, the most acclaimed) Estonian novelist of the second half of the twentieth century. Now, as we approach the turn of the millennium, with Estonia enjoying — in this century and in all times — the twenty-eighth year of its political independence as a nation, one can see ever more clearly that the ultimate goal of Jaan Kross’ to date fifteen novels and a dozen or so shorter narratives has been to build up Estonia’s identity as a nation — thus, in a way, fictionally anticipating history.
