Summary/Abstract: Between the years 1850-1918, about 7000 young Romanians followed their studies at universities from Central and Western Europe. With rural origins and coming from families of farmers, priests, schoolmasters, the Romanian young students lived unique experiences in the great university metropolises. Student life and the habitual fashionable life of the cafés, with balls and soirées, contributed to the moulding of new cultural patterns in the future intellectuals’ consciousness. The city was a civilizing agent, a vector of modernity.
