Summary/Abstract: In Islamic publications that appeared between 1990 and 2011, there were eleven articles dealing with Islam and democracy. This is an important figure given the social and political realities in the country. All of the authors emphasize concepts supporting the basic principle of democracy: mutual consultation (shura), consensus of the Muslim community on religious issues (ijma), and independent reasoning (ijtihad), stressing the compatibility of Islam with democracy. Some of these authors speak of Islamic democracy (theodemocracy), highlighting differences between Western democracies and the Islamic tradition. In contrast to the unlimited form of popular sovereignty in Western secular democracies, Islamic democracy is a limited form of popular sovereignty, governed by the prescriptions or ordinances of the Divine Law.
