A Night in Lisbon

Summary/Abstract: The first thing that occurred to me in connection with Lisbon, a city in which I was to be for the first time, was the title of an old novel by Remarque, A Night in Lisbon. Remarque’s novel is concerned with the already forgotten time when “a man meant nothing” and “a valid passport everything”. I came across that quotation as I waited several hours in a West Berlin office to have my German visa extended, and then some two hours in the small East Berlin office of the Portuguese consulate, with Remarque in my hand.
