Summary/Abstract: The question whether or not symbolising talk of God and of other “transcendent” concepts transcends not only the limits of inter-personal communication, but also the limits of human knowledge, is old and over and over raised anew. H. F. Geißer indicates these limits, but also the structure of “limit” that always needs to be understood as both separation and connection. This shows that the concept of “limit“ and the possibility to develop images of transcending limits in a limit-transcending way are key characteristics of religion. These images are rather expressions of a form of reflection that understands any finite reality as a simile. Religious art provides an example for this. In the monotheistic religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, however, there are also single examples of some entity that preserves simile and what it is like as unity: Torah, Christ, and Koran.
