Summary/Abstract: The occurrences of Past Simple forms, in face to face communication, imply different interpretations in relation to their position in verbal interaction and to the verbal forms used in the previous statement. This article aims to present a few examples of verbal couples, such as Present Tense – Past Simple Tense, Past Perfect Tense – Past Perfect Tense and an analysis of the values given to the statements containing them. The use of the model suggested by Laurent Gosselin (Sémantique de la temporalité, 1996) and the use of the theory of pertinence allow us to decide upon a non-exhaustive list of possible interpretations.
