Summary/Abstract: For national societies, the process of European integration means getting closer to and learning a lot of things about one another. This is, unfortunately, not the case with the Polish and the Romanians, who seem to be moving farther away from each other. Since 1990, the image of the Romanians has continuously deteriorated in the Polish public opinion. Polish sociologists ascertain precisely that lack of information and low levels of individual modernity amongst their cocitizens are the essential causes engendering this situation. The author of this essay tries to expand the field of investigation into the origins of this phenomenon by approaching Polish-Romanian relationships from a political and cultural-historical perspective.
