Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article is stereotypical views on Polish, as perceived by a native speaker and by a foreigner. The author’s own analyses as well as introductory research indicate that Polish is usually described as a complicated, difficult to master, not only for foreigners, but also for the Polish (referring to difficulties with memorizing the norm of accurate Polish). The paper is also an attempt to analyze the reasons for this kind of stereotype about Polish. Its origin can be found in the language history. In the view presented by linguistic knowledge on Polish, mostly unjustified, it discourages many foreigners from taking up learning of the language, while many Poles use it as an excuse for numerous deviation of the required norm.
