Summary/Abstract: Is it the reader who makes the book? What struck me as incredible while reading 1984 was not the world view of the novel, but the fact that this world view came from an English author. To me, a stranger to England but familiar with what the writer was fighting against, “oligarchical collectivism” felt like a fully-fledged re-encounter with an organisation I had seen before at an embryonic stage. From my perspective based on past experience even the “two plus two makes five” scene appeared far from paradoxical, calling to mind a debate that took place ten years ago.
