Summary/Abstract: Apart from his passionate, outspoken and atypical love for Olga Knipper (who later became his wife), there is nothing else known about his flings or affairs. And, although researchers have looked thoroughly for the avatars of his female characters, they haven't found much. According to Troyat, “It was rumoured that he had been involved with a ballerina, as well as with a French actress at the Lentovski Theatre. Chekhov himself confessed that he enjoyed his visits to The Varieties Lounge, one of Moscow's most famous public houses where, beside debauched officers, there were a lot of demimondaines too.” Cautious and prude, Chekhov always joked on the topic, and so nobody ever knew what the truth really was … Besides, he considered himself too old for affairs at the age of 30. But at 41, believe it or not, he felt it was only natural for him to be in love!
