Summary/Abstract: This paper for the first time thoroughly explains the interest of A.N. Ostrovsky in A.N. Veselovsky’s monograph “The Sketches of Moliere. Tartuffe. The History of the Type and Play” kept in the playwright’s private library. An attempt is made to consider a number of marginal notes of Ostrovsky-reader and to project them on his personality and works. An examination of the playwright’s notes in Veselovsky’s monograph gives a holistic idea about Ostrovsky as a reader of Moliere and in a way as an active investigator of European comedy. The tradition of the world comedy in the context of Moliere’s works is also discussed.
