Summary/Abstract: In this paper, by analyzing an ode written in 1817 by G.N. Gorodchaninov, the first professor of Russian literature at the Imperial Kazan University, and dedicated to the University’s anniversary, we discuss the main regularities in the existence and evolution of the “city text” in Russian literature of the first decades of the 19th century. In this context, we investigate the issues of interaction between the philosophical-and-aesthetic and the political-and-ideological levels in the artistic structure of the Russian ode of that period. Special attention is paid to the problem of G.N. Gorodchaninov’s moral ideal and its importance for the formation of the value system of the Russian ode at the turn of the 19th centuries.
