Summary/Abstract: The present essay is an excerpt from a study devoted to the hermetic philosophy and its controversial relationship with the ancient egyptian tradition. The author reveals the role of Thoth (regarded as hermes by the greeks) in the ptolemaic and roman egypt and discusses the socalled hermetic writings and their impact on the western civilization during mediaeval and renaissance periods. The special attention is paid to the relationship between hermetic and platonic doctrines as well as various forms of magic, astrology, and talismanic lore practiced by marsilio ficino and other renaissance scholars.
