Summary/Abstract: The paper deels with the problem of individuality and universality of the expression of the basic aesthetic notions in artefacts. Both the local originality and widely spread similarities in symbolism of the binary cultural archetypes are investigated. The symbolic aspects of Lithuanian woven belt ornament are compared with the decoration of the artefacts of the Neolithic Tripolye-Kukuteni culture (Ukraine-Romania) as well as with the binary images and symbols of the west Lithuanian and Kazakhstan memorial monuments, and far eastern (Sakhalin, Amur), Central Asian (altay) artefacts. The similarities of the western lithuanian belt ornamentation with the decorative aspects (which have clearer meaning) of the memorial monuments of the 19th century west Lithuania - krikštai and their analogues with the Kazakh memorial monuments, as well as the analogues of the Lithuanian belt decoration with the neolithic South East European Tripolye-Kukuteni and Eneolithic Turkmenistan ceramics decoration, also with ancient Chinese signs - speaks about the archaic nature of the symbolism of Lithuanian belt ornamentation and ornament creation as well as about the mythological bases of its aesthetics. The issues of Lithuanian custom to tie woven belts to memorial monuments on various occasions may have ritualistic-functional issues: in earlier times woven belts may have been used to tie the offerings to the sacred pole. The popularity of the dual symbolism in Western Lithuanian woven belts proves the idea of Norbertas Vėlius about the spreading of the binary symbolism in the Western Lithuania.
