Summary/Abstract: Presents the school and educational system in the eastern, hungarian, part of the Habsburg monarchy between 1867 and 1914, using Upper Hungary (Slovakia) and Transylvania as examples to demonstrate the general problems and challenges of the hungarian school system. Schools were a major battlefield where different nationalities fought for the spread of national ideas. The special focus of this study lies on the practical realization of hungarian school policies and its influences on the formation of political ideas from a decentralized perspective based upon everyday experiences.
