Is the Hindu Answer to the Problem of Suffering Satisfying from a Purely Rational Perspective?

Summary/Abstract: It has sometimes been asserted by certain contemporary Hindu scholars that the Hindu doctrines of Karma and Rebirth offer a rationally satisfying answer to the nagging problem of suffering, which has baffled the thinkers of both West and East throughout the ages. In their view, it is the best solution, better than any other offered, and in particular, better than the Christian one. The author of the present contribution analyzes the content and implications of the Hindu solution and comes to the conclusion that it is not as satisfying from the purely rational perspective, as it is claimed to be; for the doctrines of Karma and reincarnation, on which that solution is based, cannot be verified and established by the sole means of human reasoning. They rather belong to that domain which is inaccessible to the sole human reason. Les penseurs occidentaux sont d’avis qu’il n’y a pas de solution purement rationnelle et satisfaisante pour le problème de la souffrance, surtout de celle des innocents, un problème qu’ils désignent « le problème du mal », et qui a déjoué tous les efforts de la recherche par la raison humaine. En revanche, certains penseurs hindous contemporains prétendent que la solution avancée par le hindouisme, par le moyen de leurs doctrines de Karma et de réincarnation, est non seulement satisfaisante pour la raison humaine, mais qu’elle est aussi la meilleure de toutes les solutions jusqu’ici proposées, en tous cas une meilleure solution que celle avancée par les penseurs chrétiens. L’auteur de la présente contribution analyse le contenu et les implications de ces deux doctrines de Karma et de réincarnation, sur lesquelles leur théorie est fondée, et il est arrivé à la conclusion que la solution hindoue n’est pas satisfaisante pour la seule raison humaine ; car ces doctrines appartiennent, en dernière analyse, à un domaine qui est inaccessible à la seule raison humaine.
