Ancient Texts on “Malabar Plants” Compared to Modern Views and Scientific Knowledge

Summary/Abstract: First descriptions of particular “Malabar plants” in Arabic, Portuguese, German and in the Dutch Flora Hortus Indicus Malabaricus are compared with respect to phytography, cultivation, medicinal and other uses of Malayalis, Tamils, Indo-Aryans, Moplahs and foreign merchants of the ports. Further discussions concern the Indian plant names (etymology, different scripts of Malayalam found in the Hortus); former use of Arabi-Malayalam and Aljamia Portuguesa; early trade between Malabar and Romance countries; different scopes and experience of the quoted authors and biased evaluation of their work. Les premières descriptions de quelques « plantes du Malabar » en arabe, portugais, allemand et dans la flore du Hortus Indicus Malabaricus sont comparées par rapport à la phytographie et à la culture, aux utilisations médicales ou autres par des Malayalis, Tamils, Indo-aryens, Moplahs et marchands étrangers des ports. Autres discussions se rapportent aux noms de plantes indiennes (étymologie, écritures différentes du malayalam trouvé dans le Hortus), usage antérieur de l’arabe-malayalam et de l’Aljamia Portuguesa, au commerce ancien entre Malabar et les pays latins, aux buts et expériences différentes des auteurs cités, ainsi que leur appréciation faussée.
