Summary/Abstract: Marko Ristić, a Serbian writer, was the Yugoslav ambassador in Paris from 1945 to 1951. Although he was not a member of the Communist Party at that time, the new communist government appointed him to the post for several reasons: knowledge of the French language, familiarity with French intellectual circles, political suitability and the lack of experienced and professional personnel for the diplomatic service in the Party itself. Milovan Đilas probably played a crucial role in his appointment. During his service in Paris the relations between Ristićand the personnel, who were members of the Communist Party, was very bad. Members of the Party, who were his associates - Yugoslav diplomats in Paris (attaches, secretaries, councilors) criticized him or came into conflict with him mostly for the following reasons: firstly, they criticized his concept of diplomacy and the way he served as ambassador; secondly, they were convinced that he did not accept the communist ideology; thirdly, they criticized his personality and character; fourthly, they claimed that it was impossible to cooperate with him. On the other hand, Ristićwas not satisfied because his associates were young members of the Communist Party who were politically suitable but did not have any diplomatic experien-ce and some of them did not even speak foreign languages.
