Summary/Abstract: Drawing on the notion that Vladek’s foreignized English in Art Spiegelman’s Maus is a pivotal feature of his identity as a Polish Jew and a survivor of the concentration camps, this essay explores the various strategies employed by different translators who have attempted to represent his voice across a range of Romance languages. The essay also examines how some aspects of Vladek’s testimony defy the threshold of translatability, inherent as they are to a language unique to the concentrationary universe.
