Summary/Abstract: The paper presents results from a survey about functioning of innovation networks in the information and communication technologies (ICT) industry in Bulgaria. The aim of the analysis is to explore the impact of the innovation networks upon the innovation activity in companies in the ICT industry in Bulgaria, emphasising upon the impact of the external innovation networks. A typology has been established about the innovation networks. Distinction has been made between internal and external innovation networks. The internal innovation networks are defined as interactions among agents and actors within the company with the aim of creating new product or improving an existing one, as opposed to the company’s interactions with external agents, such as business agents (such as clients, suppliers, competitors, etc.) universities, research institutes, government agencies, NGOs, that are defined as external innovation networks. Another aspect in the typology is the distinction among external innovation networks. The external innovation networks are distinguished as external national innovation networks and external international innovation networks - the former referring to the interactions that companies establish within the country, while the later refer to interactions with agents abroad. Complex comparative assessment has been undertaken about the impact of the innovation networks upon the innovation activities in the companies in the ICT industry in Bulgaria. It is based upon a comparative analysis of the impact of the innovation networks as sources of innovation ideas and as factors for creation of innovations, and also based upon the delimitation between internal and external innovation networks. The results reveal active interactions within the internal innovation networks. Within the external innovation networks active interactions have been registered in the business sector, while the interactions among the ICT companies, universities and research institutes remain weak.
