A Road to Marx in the 21st Century

Summary/Abstract: This article grounds a possible approach to Marx’s heritage from a contemporary point of view. Marx is our contemporary, because important social problems of the 19th century continue to exist in the 21st as well, particularly in connection with the specific „restart“ of capitalism during the last decades. At the same time, the catastrophic 20th century has moved us away from the classical Marxist perception of social, scientific and philosophical issues. In this connection, the basic Marxist thesis about the unity of philosophy, science and social practice is considered critically. Further on, the article raises a range of questions, the answers to which would outline the parameters of a plausible contemporary reading of Marx’s works. Finally, some risks of misunderstanding are considered in the particular social, intellectual and cultural situation that lacks a specifically academic tradition of research on Marx.
