Summary/Abstract: If the kind of society which replaces, within the Romanian context, the former communist one, imagined itself as a democratic one, it should had made possible the formation of a political and social conscience and it should had contributed to its preservation. Thus, in the recent Romanian history, the transition from communism to what was presented as democracy and defined as postcommunism, should have created the conditions at least for the foundation of a public space as a place of the constant display of a subsequent public sphere. The degree of modernisation of a society is, as the whole Western political theory demonstrates, directly determined and affected by how functional the public sphere of this society is and how sustainable the display of its public sphere is. Therefore, this work traces the historical and cultural causes of the difficult genesis of the Romanian postcommunist public space.
