Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the virtual museums of communism in Bulgaria, focusing on several Internet sites and Facebook groups that exhibit e-materials and objects from the communist period. Initially attempting to function as substitutes for the lacking museum of communism in the country, after September 2011 they envisaged becoming an alternative to the newly-founded museum of socialist art in Sofia. Yet their understanding of communism fails to go beyond the traditional split between a totalitarian approach with an accent on terror and victims' suffering and a revisionist approach privileging an everyday life perspective with a focus on material culture. The divergent micro-publics formed around those virtual museums gave rise to distinct, heterogeneous, fragmented, and isolated memories without turning into catalysts for a master forum and a shared memory of communism.
