Summary/Abstract: Discussion of the key mental threads in Piotr Matywiecki’s monograph Twarz Tuwima [‘The Face of Tuwim’]. On reconstructing the poet’s image as emergent from the book, the reviewer focuses on the issue of Tuwim’s ‘absent presence’ in his own output. She considers the status of ‘Purgatory phantom’ attached to the poet by Matywiecki to be a particularly expressive case of a more general phenomenon – the author’s phantom-like presence in their work.
