The forgotten precursors. An archaeology of reflexion on sadism and masochism

Summary/Abstract: Sadism and masochism are omnipresent topoi of science and culture, reappearing in innumerable episodes and forms, all of which build upon conceptualisations made at the very origins of modern psychology and psychiatry. Inspired by a Foucauldian archaeological approach, this article attempts at exploring the way in which sadism and masochism were seen by Richard von Krafft-Ebing, a nineteenth-century psychiatrist, and Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis.
