Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the experiences of the Slovenian Sociological Society during the forty years of existence and will be followed by another on the identity, employment and future prospects of the sociologist. The Society was established in the era of the delegitimisation of the hegemony arising from visions of socialism and threats to the country from without. It grappled with an ideology based on the logic of excluding alternatives and fought for an empirical investigation of the hidden and consequently focused on the challenges for change. Along with its projects to professionalise sociology in education and research, it also became an actor in civil society and had an influence on the process of democratisation. But while the number of sociology graduates rose the number of Society members fluctuated and stagnated. Internal differentiation of the Society into sections was limited and the academic corps predominated with their proclivities towards the outside world rather than towards practicing sociologists who understandably tended to be left aside. Great progress was made in terms of publication but the language problem, Slovenian and/or English, remains unresolved. Through the Society, and to an even greater extent without it, Slovenian sociologists have spread abroad and in this sense Slovenia has become a kind of major power in miniature. But both the specialist and general public knows little about the Society’s work.
