David Prodan and Fernand Braudel: Affinities and Analogies

Summary/Abstract: The author reveals both the common and individual, methodological and theoretical elements of David Prodan and Fernand Braudel’s works, through a systematic examination of both historians’ writings. Starting from a biographical event – the address from the Association of American Historians to David Prodan inviting him to become Fernand Braudel’s successor– the author stresses the innovative character of both historians, their interests in socio-economic structures, their practice of history following the pattern of the long duration – though the last is credited to be the French historian’s achievement. Special attention is paid to the definition and application of the historiographical program of study they belonged to. Though the differences are evident – the different historiographical tradition, the access to certain kind of scientific literature, different socio-political contexts at the time when their projects developed, or the cultural extension of the study - the accent falls on the affinities, visible at the thematic level (e.g. the interest for labor as important factor for defining a civilization) and the minute practice of historical investigation. Last but not least the fact that brings them even closer is that both historians created historiographical schools.
