Summary/Abstract: With the development of the global economy, the extent of the influence of different factors of economic growth changes. In the conditions of the newly-forming knowledge economy, the generation, exchange and implementation of learning has become the main engine of economic development. In these circumstances, the European Union aims (under the Lisbon strategy) to become the most competitive, dynamic, knowledge-based economy, with more and better employment opportunities and higher social cohesion. A member state of the EU, Bulgaria has to meet European standards and requirements for development, including those concerning human capital. All these determine the importance of the problems of human capital, of the necessity of investment in its development, of the efficiency of its use and of the need for a targeted state strategy and policy in this sphere. The subject investigated in this article is the process of the reproduction of human capital in Bulgaria in its economic perspective, with the accent on education. Other aspects, such as health status and migration processes, are not the subjects of the investigation herein.
