Summary/Abstract: Ever since the inter-war days, there has been a great deal of conjecture in the Romanian historiography regarding the identity of Stanciul, pârcălab of Cetatea Albă, from the second half of the fifteenth century. In this debate there have been involved historians such as Mihai Costăchescu, Ilie Minea, I. C. Miclescu-Prăjescu or Nicolae Stoicescu. The evidence they appealed to for supporting their own opinions were mostly based on historical logics, since there hasn’t been discovered a document to make a clear reference to the ascendence of this high official. The main characters he has been identified with were: Stanciul Ponici, Stanciul Stărostescul, Stanciul Marele and Stanciul, the son of Oană, vornic of Suceava, boyars who lived in the first half of the 15th century. In this study, I have made an analysis, based on the documents of that time, regarding the family of this boyar, his career and founder’s activities, as well as a branch of Stanciul’s family, between the 15th and 17th centuries; in the end, I have presented a document proof, found in the leaves of The Diptych of Bistriţa Monastery, by which it is proved that Stanciul, pârcălab of Cetatea Albă, was indeed the son of Oană, vornic of Suceava.
