Summary/Abstract: The history of European philosophy which begins with the Ionic philosophers has reached us only in excerpts. The beginnings of Indian philosophy are much better preserved but they still await systematic investigation. What makes it more difficult is that the philosophical thought is expressed in concepts which are strongly linked with everyday experience. The paper attempts to show the usefulness of cognitive linguistics in reconstruction of the ancient Indian philosophical texts. The source material comes from "Śatapathabrāhmana" (c.a. 9th-8th BC). The analysis is centered on the concept of belly and on the scenario of food preparation and eating in terms of which sophisticated philosophical concepts are conceived.
