Summary/Abstract: The paper, based both on reference dictionaries and data excerpted from the National Corpus of Polish, depicts how the notion of ‘płacz’ (‘cry’) is construed by the speakers of Polish. The analysis makes use of cognitive linguistics paradigm and Ch. Fillmore’s theory of frame semantics. Description of categories connected with the situation of crying is provided. Elements of the ‘crying’ frame are grouped into two general categories: central components (SUBJECT OF CRYING, BASIC SYMPTOMS OF CRYING, EVOCATIVE FEELING) and peripheral components (e.g. CAUSE FOR CRYING, ORGAN OF CRYING, LOCATION OF CRYING).
